Description: St. Patrick has been upheld as the patron saint of Ireland, but he has also been said to have "driven out the snakes," including a possible abrupt overthrowing of earlier religious and spiritual practices in Ireland. Was this story even true? And, is it possible to instead "embrace the snakes," in a life-affirming, inclusive way? Come to the Sunday service on Zoom for an engaging exploration, featuring Irish music, readings, and reflections with Amy Panetta and her musician friends joining us from Ireland, the US, and Canada.

Title: Breathing Life into Cold Winter: Honoring Imbolc and Brigid’s Day

Description: January and February in Quebec are quite cold and frosty, but the upcoming agricultural holiday of Imbolc on February 1st celebrates the beginning of springtime in Celtic lands. Imbolc has also been associated with the feast day for Sainte Brigid. Together, we will explore the historical figure of Sainte Brigid and traditions and songs associated with her feast day. Let this celebration be an opportunity to meditate on what new life we would like to sow and sprout in the springtime to come! Musician: Mike Matheson.

Title: Exploring the Music Devoted to Brigid in Preparation for Imbolc

Led by Amy Panetta, MA

Description: The upcoming agricultural holiday of Imbolc celebrates the very beginning of Springtime in the Celtic lands when flowers begin to bloom and cows give milk.  Imbolc has been associated with Brigid who is both a  pre-Christian goddess and patron saint of Ireland.  She is connected with poetry, healing, smith-craft, fertility, and fire.  At the dawning of Christianity in Ireland, many attributes of the pre-Christian, Pagan Celtic society were assimilated in the formation of a new religious culture.  In our times, many individuals have written songs and chants devoted to Brigid, a practice currently being sustained by a surge of interest in “Celtic heritage”, the Feminine Divine, saints, mythology, and folklore.

In this interactive class, we will gain a sense of community and shared sacred space as we prepare for Imbolc by focusing on what new growth we would like to sprout and cultivate for ourselves during the year.  As we learn more about Brigid, we will connect with the Feminine Divine energy of Brigid as nurturer, healer, Earth mother, and woman of compassion.  Because Brigid has been so inspirational to so many people as a feminine religious and spiritual figure, we will explore the music that has been written in devotion to her.  We will engage together in participatory singing and music-listening experiences to connect us to her aspects during Imbolc.  All musical skill levels are welcome!

In this interactive class, we will meditate on what new life we would like to sprout in the springtime to come, learn more about the historical figure of Brigid and traditions associated with her, experience songs written in dedication to Brigid, and learn a song written in Irish Gaelic! All musical skill levels are welcome!
